AFRICA TWIN: Danny sent us this forest access roa AFRICA TWIN:

Danny sent us this forest access road beast from the Cochrane / Hearst area for a set up.  After our initial measuring and calculations, Danny decided to go with a service, revalve and respring front and rear vs replacing all the suspension. 

FORKS:  As is typical from the OEM's we find overly soft damping for "just leaving the showroom comfort", combined with way too high oil level to help prevent bottoming.  While this combo feels ok at lower speeds, it gets quickly overwhelmed when a fast rider hops on and trys to carry big pace.  We stiffened up both the compression and the rebound, serviced the forks with fresh oil, seals, wipers and bushings and then assembled them into the triple clamps perfectly.  The reduction in stiction while improving the damping control should be dramatic. 

SHOCK:  Again both rebound and compression were inadequate inside on the main setting.  Also Danny could JUST hit sag with the preload at maximum.  So, we did the math and exchanged the rear spring with a quality Eibach unit with a custom machined adapter to hit his sag targets at full preload minimum.  THIS ALLOWS THE PRELOAD ADJUSTER TO ACTUALLY PERMIT AND CORRECT FOR ADDED WEIGHT ON THE BIKE, not just fix the sag from factory.  Please remember: MOST JAPANESE BIKES ARE SPRUNG FOR 150 -170 POUND RIDERS.  We arrogantly think here in North America that these bikes should be perfect for our 220-240 pound riders... not the case. YAMAHA T7 UPGRADE: The mighty Yamaha Super Tenere YAMAHA T7 UPGRADE:

The mighty Yamaha Super Tenere and the Tenere 700 have a massive following for good reason.  They are wonderful adventure bikes that can truly do it all.  We especially love the dirt bias of the T7 as it is lighter and more nimble than most big adventure bikes, yet can still handle highway duty with ease.

As is the case with most bikes, money is saved on the suspension.  Here we are servicing and revalving the forks for GINO and installing an OHLINS rear shock.  During the process we are lowering the bike just over an inch to help Gino with un even ground, backing up and general confidence for his 5' 10" frame.

IS THE CRF HONDA UNDERSPRUNG?: When a customer dr IS THE CRF HONDA UNDERSPRUNG?:

When a customer drops a bike off for a major improvement, one of us in the shop is usually close to the weight of the customer to quantify sags and get them close before they pick up the unit.  We measured up this brand new CRF to see WHAT WEIGHT OF RIDER WAS THE BIKE DESIGNED FOR?  Well for an adventure bike with 10-11" of travel, we look for 3-4" SAG WITH RIDER ON BOARD. (thats 75-100mm approx). Well, our shop Santa is the perfect rider weight for this Honda and he tips the scales at a whopping 1.0 pounds LOL. 

So, the ideal owner of a Honda CRF is about 6'3" (its super tall) and under 5 pounds... Think about that for a moment.  Anyway, call us if you own one of these, or share this post if you know someone, and we can get you a GREAT SHOCK and discuss your forks.  Ohlins, Hyper Pro, Stadium, and K-Tech all make great shocks for the otherwise awesome Honda.

TECH TIP + HARLEY SHOCK OPTIONS: TECH TIP: We ha TECH TIP + HARLEY SHOCK OPTIONS:

TECH TIP:  We have a joke in the shop that jumping off a skyscraper would likely be a lot of fun.... if it wasn't for the sudden stop at the bottom!  LOL.  Our point is that SHOCKS ARE VERY HARSH WHEN THEY BOTTOM!  So, before your next ride, throw a 5 cent zip tie on the shinny shock shaft somewhere in the middle of it's travel between the seal head and the bump rubber and then go for a ride.  Big HARLEYS TEND TO BE UNDERSPRUNG.  This tendency to bottom will worsen (dramatically) with a passenger on board.  When the shock bottoms, all smooth downward motion STOPS and you and your passenger's spine takes the brunt.

Let us get you into a GOOD shock package with a proper spring for what you are doing and what load you carry.  In these photos we have straight shocks with preload and rebound only, but we also carry piggyback shocks that add compression damping too for higher performance expectations or if you just desire more control over the bike.  Call us.  Most options are in stock of our favourite ones (best quality and value) in 12 and 13" lengths most common for the Harley, but we can do special lengths too.  705-657-9490

TECH TIP / ANOTHER STORM APPROACHING: We are expe TECH TIP / ANOTHER STORM APPROACHING:

We are expecting another storm today with winds in excessive of 140 km/h late this afternoon.... WE ARE GOING TO LOSE POWER lol.  If you are like me, your generator sits in the shop or trailer for months until the lights go out (like last months ice storm)  and then it's the most important piece of equipment you own. 

MOST GENERATORS HAVE A LOW OIL SHUT OFF!  My friend Ryan and his wife lost a battle against a flooding basement because their generator (working for a week straight) shut down with low oil and the sump pumps stopped. 

TAKE 10 MINUTES and give it an oil change.  If this is not in your wheelhouse, pay somebody or ask a friend to help.  At the very least check the oil level and top it up.  If your genny saved your butt during last months ice storm that affected Millions in central Ontario, give it some love, they need it too!  Good luck! TWIN SHIOCKS: Shocks are flying in and back out f TWIN SHIOCKS:  Shocks are flying in and back out for our big cruisers.  Usually we stock HARLEY Twin shocks to replace the terrible OEM dampers on HARLEY DAVIDSONs, but these two shocks from one of our favourite suppliers K-TECH are for a MOTO GUZZI.

Custom selected spring rates because every rider and gear load is different and then length set to application, these shocks feature INFINITE PRELOAD adjustability, COMPRESSION damping to adjust to your riding pace, and REBOUND damping to fine tune for road conditions.  This set also features a dual rate springs, which when selected properly is soft enough in the top of the stroke for just the rider alone, but firms up low in the stroke to help prevent bottoming when load increases or a passenger hops on.  It doesn't take the place of adjusting the preload for a passenger properly (if your feeling lazy), but it does make the shock much better at taking a wide variety of loads. 

This set also features ADJUSTABLE RIDE HEIGHT to make the bike steer quicker or more stable without messing up your preload to do it, or slide forks up or down in the clamps which is the other easy way of changing the bikes handling characteristics.

RUST INSIDE YOUR FORKS!: People often ask us how RUST INSIDE YOUR FORKS!:

People often ask us how often should they get the oil changed in their forks?  We sometimes hear that "i don't use the bike much so it should be ok"  Well, the reality in Canada and the northern US is that temperature fluctuations that our bikes see day to day when parked outside or in un-insulated storage will cause condensation to collect.  A cold bike when it gets hit with warm moist air will be covered in water as it collects on the cooler chassis. 

In the two later photos we see extensive rust above the oil level on the steel damper rods and often the tops of the fork springs as well.  We recommend a fork oil change every second year during standard (non competition) use for offroad bikes and every 20-30,000 km for street bikes (or every second year as well). Our point is that long term storage doesn't splash the oil around in your engine or your suspension to lubricate the steel components above the oil level, so consider maintenance before use!

WR 250 SUSPENSION: Mike sent us his forks and sh WR 250 SUSPENSION: 

Mike sent us his forks and shock for a service, revalve, respring and shorten.  After a busy snowmobile season, we are switching over to summer toys in at the shop.  Mike complained of kicking in the rear of the bike.  Without too much data, we need to determine if the kicking is from overly soft compression and/or spring which results in too much time in the shocks bump rubber.  The build up of energy when crushing the bump rubber will result in a reactive explosion out of the bump rubber, which usually overwhelms the rebound damping setting inside the shock.  So, we put the shock on the dyno to check it out.  Post runs, we decided to firm up the compression by about 15%, but firm up the rebound by about 40% as it was too light for the spring range.

After calculating the wheel to shock motion ratio, we shortened the shock appropriately which mandated a new Eibach spring.

The forks got a full service with lathe polish of the tubes, new seals, wipers and bushings and a matching lowering job inside the cartridge.  Damping was deemed to be very good and left alone.  The red lines on the forks bottom tube are to help Mike with tuning the damping and if needed the oil level by seeing how much travel the Oring displays during use. (You can see the same shaft O ring on the shock as well).

ROAD RACE FORKS: These YAMAHA R6 forks are headed ROAD RACE FORKS:

These YAMAHA R6 forks are headed out to one of my favourite little tracks on the CSBK National circuit.  AMP or Atlantic Motorsport Park in Schubenacadie Nova Scotia.  I have won races there as a rider and then again as a team owner with Jodi Christie and the Factory Honda Race team and know the track very well. 

This is Ktech's RDS damping system that drops 25mm cartridges into these Soqi forks to dramatically improve the response and control over the bumps. The forks retain compression damping and rebound damping as well as 15 turns of preload and quick change springs to tune the fork for different circuits and different braking loads.

We lathe polish your tubes and install new guide and slide bushings as well as seals and wipers so the forks are essentially new.  We can also check the tubes for run out and straighten if slightly 'tweaked'  Reach out to us today for your track or street fork upgrade.  705-657-9490

Want a massive improvement in ride comfort, control, safety and anti bottoming?  Eibach dual rate spring kits are rolling in for the big 2, 2.5 and 3" shock absorbers.  The kits come with new calculated Tender springs, Main springs and an adjustable spring crossover system so that YOU get to pick how much soft travel (comfort) and how much firm travel (anit-bottoming) you want.  Carefully tuning the crossover point will also control how much chassis roll you permit in a corner, almost like an adjustable sway bar.
