FORK DAMAGE The damage to these Ohlins forks Is FORK DAMAGE The damage to these Ohlins forks Is from an undersized set of clip on handlebars. The owner was shipped a size 1 mm too small and he had to stretch them into an application a couple years ago ( apparently). Boy was it tricky to remove the forks for service (took almost an hour). We start off our appointments by checking static (or free) and rider (or 1 G) sag. Then we know if we need to change just the preload or the spring rate as well during the service. We also cycle the clickers to get a feel for how the damping is as a baseline AND if we think it will tolerate the new spring rate.

SHIM FAILURE. Jon had mentioned that he had exper SHIM FAILURE. Jon had mentioned that he had experienced a SUDDEN LOSS OF DAMPING on his forks. We opened them up and found the mid valve shims had fractured on both sides in his WR 250R KYB forks. The Race Tech rebound piston strategy that was inside didn't permit for adequate control of the flex of these shims and about a year after installation this failure occurred. We implemented a re valve of the mid valve that will give much more support and protection for Jon. He may need a revalve down the road if the new setting is too firm, but his complaints of bottoming and soft fork action will certainly have been addressed lol. The mid valve and main compression settings need to be very balanced especially on an open chamber fork as cavitation can rapidly occur if the mid valve setting on the back of the rebound piston is stronger than the main stack setting. Jen and I have been spending the weekend in Minnes Jen and I have been spending the weekend in Minnesota at Hay Days grass drag event. This place is massive. We’ve been taking the opportunity to meet some of our friends in person that we’ve been chatting with for 20 years or so. Here are just a few photos from yesterday. This was apparently a Calabogie crash and we were tasked with salvaging the internal cartridges... Repair is in progress LOL. TESTING TESTING Here we are evaluating the BREAKA TESTING TESTING Here we are evaluating the BREAKAWAY FRICTION from a selection of fork seals and wipers on this new WP inner fork tube. It is no secret that manufacturers typically assemble forks dry with no grease or lube in the seals and wipers. A good suspension shop will encourage dismantling even brand new forks for this rudimentary upgrade, but lubrication aside, we find OEM rubber seals to be among the stickiest that we have tested. On this fork tube we have the stock seal and wiper staggered near the bottom of the fork with std SKF seals. Up next is the DUAL COMPOUND SKF seal kit and then finally the HEAVY DUTY SKF seal kit. We noticed differences in spring wind/tension on the wipers as well. Annoyingly, our favourite Seal and Wiper were not from the same kit LOL. In the second photo you can see chatter marks left on the tube from the sticky OEM seal which has this troublesome stick/slip cycle as it functions, NOT ideal for feel, bump compliance or tire grip. WP SPRING GUIDES Dennis brought us his BRAND NEW WP SPRING GUIDES Dennis brought us his BRAND NEW HUSKY TE300 PRO for initial set up last week. The rear suspension is link style and not direct acting PDS, but we still found the shock needed a slight revalve to the mid/high speed rebound circuit to control a brief moment of POP when coming off the bump rubber, which can give the feeling of rider eject at high speed. But the real disappointment was the fork action. It was both super rough in it's motion and sounded like the fork had lots of friction was full of sand LOL. You can see from the first photo that the top spring guide on the pressurized fork cartridge does a poor (well none actually) job of centralizing the spring inside the fork tubes. So the spring is allowed to rub like crazy on the inner wall of the inner fork tube, which not only generates noise and rough fork action, quickly deteriorating your oil, but sounds awful... just not smooth. This is a fairly extreme crash, but in our circles, we have seen it often. When diagnosing crash repair, we want to try and determine where the energy of the impact ended. Is the wheel or rotors bent, are the forks bent, are the triple clamps bent, are the steering head bearings punched.... then is the frame ok. Find out where the energy of the impact stopped. We got Damian's Triumph fixed up and ready for another track day.
